Friday | Therapeutics of Yoga
When we feel supported in the postures, a great sense of spaciousness can emerge.
Therapeutic yoga is a specialized practice that focuses on using props, breathwork, and alignment cues to tailor movements to an individual’s unique needs. It emphasizes healing over challenging postures, making it particularly beneficial for relieving physical pain and calming the nervous system—guiding practitioners toward a state of balance and well-being.
Joan will look at specific issues dealing with the shoulders and neck and the lower back, two common places where people feel pain and carry tension. She will guide you through a specific alignment based practice, using props to help support your joints and to achieve balance in the body and mind.
This session begins with a discussion on understanding your body and the deeper muscles that assist in core support and stability. We will look at common aches and pains and learn how to address them with props and the use of alignment cues. The practices will be very specific and end with restoratives to replenish and create a great sense of awareness in your body, mind, and spirit.
All levels welcome!
Saturday | Advancing in Your Practice
Learn what defines an advanced practice and how to break down challenging postures to make them accessible for you and your students. Practicing advanced poses can teach us to be more disciplined and leave us feeling stronger and more alert.
We’ll begin with a discussion on the key elements of an advanced practice, followed by a deep dive into asana, focusing on breaking down seemingly challenging and unattainable poses. Joan will guide you step-by-step, honoring the progression needed to approach these postures with steadiness and ease—without feeling overwhelmed.
You’ll explore how to deconstruct postures, understand their components, and design practices that promote growth and evolution for both yourself and your students. We will end the day with a discussion on the higher limbs of yoga, the real advanced practice, including pranayama techniques and meditations to guide you toward stillness.
Sunday | Learning to Read Bodies & Hands on Assists
This asana-focused day is designed for teachers and practitioners who want to deepen their understanding of alignment, refine their use of props, and prevent injuries. This training is ideal for yogis looking to enhance their practice and for teachers wanting to improve their ability to read bodies and provide hands-on assists tailored to individual needs.
We’ll explore how to increase longevity in your practice by studying energy lines in the body and learning to align the bones for optimal muscle function. Step-by-step, we’ll address how to refine vulnerable areas of the body, such as the knees, lower back, and neck, creating stability and support.
Joan will begin with a discussion on the art of hands-on assists in today’s yoga world. You’ll learn how to create a safe and supportive environment for your students by identifying areas of stagnation (tamasic) or overactivity (rajasic) and bringing balance (sattva) to the body. Through the use of props and wall space, you’ll gain tools to align the body from the inside out, bringing a sense of brightness, vitality, and ease in every posture.
This day will help you to improve your confidence as a teacher by refining your instruction, the use of props, and learning to meet each student’s unique individual needs.
